Excerpt:

Smiling, Jodie asked the back of Rebecca's head: "Want to go upstairs?"

Rebecca's face turned to her again. This is it, Jodie thought.

"Excuse me?"

"You heard."

Rebecca stared. "You're kidding, right?"

Jodie kept smiling.

Rebecca started laughing, covering her mouth. She laughed a long time. Jodie remained the picture of confidence, smiling and staring.

Finally, Rebecca's laughter died down. "You're for real, aren't you?"

"Uh-huh."

Rebecca betrayed a moment of uncertainty, glancing around as if to see if anyone was listening in on the conversation. Then she looked down at her drink. Her eyebrows knitted in an expression that Jodie recognized from many years of Rebecca-watching: the blonde was thinking about something seriously. She didn't do it often.

Then she asked: "What would I have to do?"

For a split-second, Jodie panicked. What does that mean? A thousand possibilities raced through her head. Maybe Rebecca was wondering if she would have to get naked. Maybe Rebecca was asking if she would have to go down on Jodie. Maybe Rebecca was so clueless, or drunk, that she didn't even know what she was asking. All these, and more, were valid possibilities. What should Jodie answer? Everything was on the line.

Keeping her poise, Jodie winged it once more. She gave Rebecca a knowing grin and said: "Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride."

Rebecca laughed again, but warmer this time. Jodie had delivered the perfect response. She suddenly felt invincible.

Jodie stopped leaning against the wall. She reached and hooked her little finger into one of Rebecca's. Jodie turned away, took a step, tugged--and Rebecca followed!

Heart pounding, Jodie led Rebecca away. But a few steps toward the stairs, Rebecca yanked her hand free and hurried back where she had come.

Jodie watched her leave, feeling surprisingly calm. Oh well, you didn't really think it was going to be that easy, did you...

Rebecca reappeared, approaching Jodie. A bottle of Bacardi from the booze table now dangled from one of her hands. The other hand still clutched her cup. Jodie tried to remain cool, and more importantly, act cool.

Jodie turned and began walking up the stairs. Rebecca followed her. Fortunately, one of the many members of the geek squad had turned "Welcome to the Jungle" up to 11 on the stereo in order to make an air-guitar spectacle of himself. No one noticed Jodie and Rebecca leaving together. As they ascended, Jodie looked back over her shoulder and caught a glimpse of Jenny wandering the floor. Sure enough, Jenny had run away from the icky boy and wanted to return to the comforting presence of Queen Rebecca. Sorry Jenny, Jodie thought. Tonight, she's all mine.

They turned and climbed a switchback second flight of stairs halfway up to the second floor. The home had high ceilings, and there were many steps. They were now out of view of the people below. Jodie casually placed her hand on Rebecca's magnificent ass as they walked up. Rebecca let her.

Oh my God, Jodie thought. Oh my God, oh my God.
