Here's a great annual to add to your herb garden. Atriplex hortensis, or commonly known as Garden Orache, Red Orach, Mountain Spinach, French Spinach or simply Orach. This herb can grow up to 6 feet tall, and it adds an ornamental appeal to the garden. The leaves are spinach-like and are used in summer salads. This variety, Red Plume, has vibrant red stems and leaves, and it prefers a position in full sun. Sow indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last expected frost. Press the seed into the soil and thinly cover it. Keep moist and maintain temperatures between 60 - 70F. Orach seed can be sown directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed.
