What is Hoodia Gordonii?

By it's botanical name Asclepiadacea Hoodia Gordonii belongs to the Milkweed Family. There
are approximately 20 sub species of Hoodia.
For tens of thousands of years, Hoodia Gordonii, a South African succulent (resembling a
cactus) from the Kalahari desert, has been used by the SAN and Xhomani peoples to stave off

Hoodia grows foot tall multi-stemmed pillars, each 3-4 inches in diameter. This maturing  takes 3 years. The plant occupies a "foot print" about 15" in diameter. When left undisturbed  it can live more than a century and reach six feet in height.
 
Hoodia Gordonii enjoys inhospitable conditions in the Kalahari Desert of the Southern African region. It is scattered naturally throughout its arid terrain. Today it has CITES* Schedule II endangered species protection. It isn't in immediate danger of extinction. Schedule II puts the plant under South African government monitoring to prevent critical decline of the plant species. It is no longer plentiful in the wild but is farmed extensively.
