Scabies is a highly contagious, itchy skin condition caused by very small, wingless insects or mites called the Human Itch mite or Scabies itch mite. Another name for the mite is Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis (Hering). Its a a tiny insect just visible to the eye (about 0.4mm or smaller than the period on this sentence) and is an eight-legged creature with a round body.
The scabies mite has been recorded at least 2,500 years ago and has infested humans ever since. Anyone of any race or age, regardless of personal hygiene can be affected. There are more than 300 million cases of scabies that has occurred worldwide every year.
A very small, hard to see, zigzag blister usually marks the trail of the insect as she lays her eggs. You may also experience seeing burrows if the infestation is left untreated which resemble a road map.

Scabies is easily contracted indirectly by sleeping in a bed, sitting in chair or other area where someone with scabies has been for any length of time. Many have contracted scabies even in the cleanest hotels because often not all bedding is change from previous guests. Scabies mites are so small they easily pass through most sheets and bedding. They are attracted to your heat signal and go for you. We have found many uninformed people afflicted with scabies will leave their home while they are treating it with pesticides and room hop from hotel to hotel for several nights thinking they are doing the right thing by leaving their home hoping the scabies will die in a few days. This of course only spreads scabies to far more people. This is also why any scabies treatment program that doesn’t include treating your environment for scabies has a less than stellar success rate.
Note: Because biting mites and bed bugs are so much more mobile than scabies mites, treating your environment carries much more weight and importance than treating yourself.
Scabies is very contagious and is usually spread by:
Most common environments are:
It is not unusual to feel ok while in one location and suddenly feel intense itching or things crawling on you when you get in your car or arrive in your work location. They are waiting for you! Mites can survive on objects for up to 72 hours off of the host, so frequent washing of clothing, towels or bedding is necessary. Vacuuming regularly, steam cleaning, using diatomaceous earth in your carpets, rugs, wind sills, furniture, cars, bedding etc., and sealing your mattress in a mattress bag is important to your recovery.
Scabies does not occur because of poor hygiene, despite what some people think; however it can contribute to an infestation.
